Summer Staples

“The flowers were dressed in nothing but light.”
— Mary Oliver, excerpt from "Just as the Calendar Began to Say Summer"

One new staple, two old favorites. Maybe it’s a sign of age, but I have come to relish in wearing and re-wearing beloved items in my closet. While a younger me may have yearned for bright and shiny things, I love the mindful practice of quality over quantity.

For example, these jeans are a few years old and yet I love to pull them out when the weather gets a little warmer. Appropriately named the ‘Summer Jean,” they are a lightweight, light wash denim perfect for those hot and balmy days. I am happy to report that Madewell still makes them and they are under $100. They only get better with age.

To keep those summer freckles at bay, a straw hat is in order. This hat is perfect in it’s simplicity. No ribbons, feathers, or unnecessary adornments. It is beautiful in its shape and if taken care of, should last a lifetime.

And finally, after my older and wiser spiel, I can’t resist all temptations. When I saw this cotton, gauzy top from Vince, I knew it would be something I would get a lot of use out of: tucked into jeans, over a bathing suit, or loose over some tapered pants. It has a split hem in the back that makes it extra flattering.

Hopefully the sun will start coming out in gloomy LA and I will be able to pull out all my summer staples!
